In 1913, Death Valley was the site of the highest temperature ever recorded
in this country, 134 degrees. And in 1974, the mercury topped 100 degrees for
134 straight days before dipping into the double digits. No records have been set so far this year.
One habit modern residents have developed to help them survive the
temperatures is, in the summer, they pump cold water through their hot-water pipes
because the insulation can be used to cool the water. The hot water, which
needs no insulation, comes through the cold-water pipe. This arrangement is
fine for most residents, who end the day with a cold shower.
